Who am I writing to? A French exam task on audience

Identify the reader and your role, compare two openings, then write a B1 request to a centre coordinator with a model answer and an audience checklist.

In short

Find three things in the instructions: who you are, who receives the message and what you want them to do. Those details guide your opening, your tu or vous choice and the information you include.

Bonjour Madame Martin,

Cordialement,

Camille Bernard

Notice the request in the model

Would a room be available at your centre on Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm?

The conditional makes a courteous enquiry. Madame Martin still needs to answer.

The model adds a time window and describes the furniture needed. Both details help the coordinator check the room. Votre centre addresses her directly; notre association would describe the writer’s group.
