In short

An infinitive can name the action your sentence is about: Lire aide à comprendre means “Reading helps us understand”. Lire is the subject; aide is the conjugated main verb. One infinitive phrase takes a singular main verb, even when its own object is plural: Lire ces textes prend du temps.

Can an infinitive be the subject in French?

The action being discussed and what you say about it
Whole subjectConjugated main verbRest of the sentence
Lireaideà comprendre.
Relire ce passagepermetde mieux comprendre le personnage.
Comparer les points de vueestutile.
Comprendre ces métaphoresdemandede l’attention.

Read each row across as one sentence. The infinitive stays in its dictionary form. The main verb makes the statement: aide, permet, est, demande. A longer subject still works in the same slot: Lire can become Lire ce passage à voix haute. The whole group names the activity.

A plural object stays inside the action

Les textes prennent du temps. The texts take time.

Focus: several texts are the grammatical subject

Ces textes prennent du temps à lire.
These texts take time to read.

Lire les textes prend du temps.Reading the texts takes time.

Focus: one activity is the grammatical subject

Lire ces textes prend du temps.
Reading these texts takes time.

In the second pattern, les textes receives the action of lire. It stays plural, but the complete subject is the reading activity. A quick substitution makes this clear: Cela prend du temps. The nearest noun is not always the word that controls the main verb.

Where do pronouns and negatives go with an infinitive subject?

Ce passage est difficile. Le relire aide à comprendre le personnage.

This passage is difficult. Rereading it helps us understand the character.

Le replaces ce passage inside the subject phrase le relire. It is the object of the infinitive.

Ne pas répondre risque d’aggraver le malentendu.

Not replying risks making the misunderstanding worse.

Ne pas goes before the subject infinitive répondre. The finite main verb is risque.

Compare a direct subject with a topic

Lire, c’est découvrir d’autres points de vue.

Reading means discovering other points of view.

The comma makes lire the topic, followed by c’est. A direct subject also works: Lire permet de découvrir d’autres points de vue.
