French pauses: where to break a longer message
Group French speech by meaning: keep linked words together, separate stages of a message and practise choosing useful pause points in short announcements.
In short
Pause where a unit of meaning ends. Keep close partners such as le rendez-vous and à dix heures together, then separate the stages of a longer message. A speech group can end through a change in pitch or a slightly longer syllable as well as a silence.

One message, three useful units
Après la réunion / nous vérifierons les dates / puis nous enverrons le message.
After the meeting / we’ll check the dates / then we’ll send the message.
The slash marks a possible group boundary. Let each unit reach its end; take a breath where you need one.
| French group | Its job |
|---|---|
| Après la réunion | Sets the time |
| nous vérifierons les dates | Gives the first action |
| puis nous enverrons le message | Adds the next action |
The message has a clear route: time, first action, next action. You can also say the final two actions in one flowing stretch. Choose a division that lets your listener follow the sequence comfortably.
Where should you pause in a French sentence?
| Keep together | Why |
|---|---|
| le frère de Nora | The whole phrase identifies the person. |
| je voudrais | The pronoun belongs with its verb. |
| à dix heures | The preposition introduces the time. |
| pour renouveler ma carte | The phrase explains the purpose. |
Le frère de Nora / arrive demain.
Nora’s brother / is arriving tomorrow.
A light boundary after the complete subject can work. In a neutral reading, carry on through the article and name.
Two commas, different jobs
Mercredi, je suis libre.
On Wednesday, I’m free.
The short opening can flow straight into the rest, with a small pitch change.
Le rendez-vous, si cela vous convient, aura lieu mercredi.
The appointment, if that suits you, will be on Wednesday.
Set the inserted comment apart so the listener can return easily to the appointment.
Punctuation shows how the written sentence fits together. Your voice adds the grouping. A comma beside a short time phrase and two commas around a longer comment can lead to quite different amounts of silence.
