French group plans: express a preference and find a compromise

Fill the gaps in a French group chat about a walk or an exhibition. Compare preferences, check a time limit and confirm a plan that works for everyone.

In short

State a preference with Je préférerais… or J’aimerais plutôt…. Ask Qu’est-ce qui vous conviendrait ? (What would suit you?) and check the practical limit before confirming the activity, time and meeting point.

PreferenceJe préférerais visiter l’exposition.I’d prefer to visit the exhibition.
AlternativeJ’aimerais plutôt faire une promenade.I’d rather go for a walk.
Time limitJe dois partir à seize heures.I have to leave at four.
CompromiseD’accord pour la promenade cette fois.Agreed on the walk this time.

Les deux refers to the two activities. It takes the plural verb plaisent. In ça vous convient, ça is singular, so the verb is convient. The agreed walk has a day, a time and a meeting point; the exhibition stays an idea for later.

Lina, Malik and Nora are choosing a Sunday outing. Complete their chat using the English cues. The walk lasts one hour; they plan to leave at two and finish at three. Nora needs to leave the group by four.

Dimanche, on fait quoi ?

Lina : Je (would prefer) visiter l’exposition au musée. Malik : Moi, j’aimerais (rather) faire une promenade. Nora : Les deux me (appeal to me), mais je dois partir à seize heures.

Lina : Combien de temps dure la promenade ? Malik : Une heure. On peut partir à quatorze heures et (come back) à quinze heures.

Lina: I’d prefer to visit the exhibition at the museum. Malik: I’d rather go for a walk. Nora: I like both, but I have to leave at four.

Lina: How long is the walk? Malik: One hour. We can leave at two and come back at three. Nora: That would leave me time to get to the station.

Lina: Agreed on the walk this time. We’ll keep the exhibition as an idea for another outing. Malik: So, Sunday at two in front of the museum, does that suit you both? Nora: Yes, very good. Lina: Yes, see you on Sunday!
