In short
Pronominal verbs use a reflexive pronoun + the imparfait of être + a past participle: elle s’était levée. Check the object relationship before adding an agreement ending: compare elle s’était lavée, elle s’était lavé les mains and elles s’étaient parlé.

How do reflexive verbs work in the plus-que-parfait?
Quand Paul a appelé, Léa s’était déjà préparée.
When Paul called, Léa had already got ready.
Getting ready comes before the call. The group s’était préparée has a reflexive pronoun, an auxiliary and a participle.
The reflexive pronouns are me, te, se, nous, vous, se. Before the vowel of être, the first three shorten to m’, t’ and s’. Keep both words in nous nous étions préparés: the first nous is the subject, and the second is the reflexive pronoun.
| Pattern | French example | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Wash oneself | Elle s’était lavée. | She washed herself: preceding direct object, feminine singular. |
| Wash one’s hands | Elle s’était lavé les mains. | The direct object is the following les mains; the reflexive pronoun is indirect. |
| Speak to each other | Elles s’étaient parlé. | Parler à quelqu’un: the reciprocal pronoun is indirect. |
| See each other | Elles s’étaient vues. | Voir quelqu’un: the reciprocal pronoun is a preceding direct object. |
With se lever and se préparer here, match the participle to the person concerned: Paul s’était levé, Léa s’était levée. For vous, gender and number depend on who is addressed. One woman gets a feminine singular participle; two women get a feminine plural participle. The drill identifies each person or group.
