In short
Build questions and negatives around the auxiliary: tu avais compris → avais-tu compris ? → tu n’avais pas compris. The participle stays after it. With a reflexive pronoun, keep that pronoun before the auxiliary: elle ne s’était pas levée.

How do you ask a question in the plus-que-parfait?
| Style | Question |
|---|---|
| Conversation | Tu avais répondu avant la réunion ? |
| With a question opener | Est-ce que tu avais répondu avant la réunion ? |
| With inversion | Avais-tu répondu avant la réunion ? |
The earlier reply is viewed from the meeting. Est-ce que keeps the normal subject–auxiliary order. Inversion joins the auxiliary and subject pronoun with a hyphen. The imparfait auxiliaries already end in a consonant: write avait-il and était-elle, with one written t.
Where does the negation go in the plus-que-parfait?
Nous n’avions pas reçu le message. We had not received the message.
Focus: a negative statement about an earlier event
n’ + auxiliary + pas + participle
N’aviez-vous pas reçu le message ?Hadn’t you received the message?
Focus: a question that can suggest the speaker expected receipt
n’ + auxiliary-subject + pas + participle
Object and reflexive pronouns stay before the auxiliary: je ne l’avais pas compris, elle ne s’était pas levée. Short adverbs follow the auxiliary too: avait déjà répondu, n’avait jamais répondu, n’avait pas encore répondu. In careful written French, keep ne or its shortened form n’.
Léa était-elle déjà partie quand tu as appelé ?
Had Léa already left when you called?
A noun subject stays before the verb; inversion adds the matching subject pronoun after the auxiliary.
