Yanis paniquait.

Read it in English

Yanis had been preparing the opening of his restaurant for months. That Friday, it was fully booked: forty people were going to arrive at eight o'clock.

At six o'clock, there was a problem: the big oven broke down. Then the phone rang: Lucas, the waiter, was ill. Yanis was panicking.

His sister Samia arrived to help. "We'll manage!" she said. They changed the menu: no roast meat, but a big vegetable couscous as the dish of the day, cooked on the hob. Samia served the tables.

In the end, the customers loved the couscous. At midnight, Yanis and Samia were exhausted but happy. The next day, the reviews on the internet were excellent.

Notice the two past tenses: the imparfait sets the scene and describes states (c'était complet, Lucas était malade, Yanis paniquait), while the passé composé moves the story forward with single events (le four est tombé en panne, Samia est arrivée).
