B1 French reading: volunteers who monitor a river

Read a French river-monitoring report with eight glosses and translation. Separate measurements, observations and proposed explanations in three questions.

In short

A number can record a measurement; a phrase such as peut-être introduces a possible explanation. Read what the volunteers note, then decide which statements their observations support and which still need checking.

Read it in English

Every Saturday morning, four volunteers meet near the old bridge. Their association has been following the river’s condition since spring. They always visit the same three places in the same order. At each stop, they record the time and use a thermometer to take the water temperature.

This Saturday, near the bridge, the device reads seventeen degrees. The previous week, in the same place, they had recorded fifteen degrees at the same time. On the marked staff fixed at the edge, the level has gone from twenty-eight to twenty-two centimetres. Lila enters the two numbers in the logbook. She adds that the water looks cloudier than the previous week.

A walker stops. “It must be because of the work further upstream,” he says. Marc replies that this is a hypothesis. It also rained heavily two days earlier. The volunteers do not yet know what explains the change in appearance. They take a photograph from their usual spot to keep a record of what they see.

Back at their base, the group prepares its report. Temperatures and levels appear in a table. The water’s appearance is described separately. The work and rain remain explanations to check. Lila wants readers to distinguish numbers, observations and assumptions. The group sends the document to a specialist team and asks what other information to collect. Its role is to observe regularly, then share data along with their limits.

Question 1No account needed
Which pair consists of numerical measurements?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Water temperature and water level.. The thermometer and marked staff provide numbers; cloudiness is described as an observation.

Question 2No account needed
What is the status of the claim about the upstream work?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

A hypothesis proposed by a walker.. Marc explicitly calls it a hypothesis; the group has not established the cause of the changed appearance.

Question 3No account needed
Why does the group send its report to specialists?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

To ask what further information to gather.. The last paragraph asks which other information to collect, keeping the limits of the current data clear.
