| Meaning | French pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| What, as an object | demander ce que | Elle demande ce que le groupe préfère. |
| What, as a subject | demander ce qui | Elle demande ce qui bloque la rue. |

Nora has an old printed route and a message from the visitor centre. Supply the reporting links or complete infinitive phrases specified in the cues. All questions are reported in the present, so the exercise focuses on their structure.
Nora veut savoir (what; subject of bloque) bloque exactement le passage et (what; object of recommande) le centre recommande aux groupes.
Read it in English
Nora welcomes a group for a walking tour. Her old sheet shows a route over the bridge, but the visitor centre has just sent another route. A visitor asks, “Is the bridge open?” Nora phones the centre and asks whether the bridge is open. She also asks where the diversion begins.
The person on the phone explains that a team is repairing the bridge. Nora wants to know what exactly is blocking the way and what the centre recommends for groups. Then she asks why the old sheet is still being handed out. The centre promises to replace it.
Nora reads the new instructions aloud: “Turn left after the fountain. Don’t cross the bridge. Wait outside the library.” She explains to the visitors that the centre advises them to turn left. She asks them not to cross the bridge and to wait outside the library.
A visitor wants to know when they will reach the quayside. Another asks how they will find their way back to the square. Nora checks the map, then suggests following Rue des Écoles. Finally, she reminds them to stay together until they reach the library. The group puts away the old sheet and sets off with a single route.
