Demain is always counted from today. In a story, an email about another date or a past event, French switches to le lendemain and la veille: Nous sommes arrivés le 5 ; le lendemain, il a plu. The same goes for ce jour-là (that day) instead of aujourd'hui.

La veille de l'examen, je dors mal.

The day before the exam, I sleep badly.

Le lendemain matin, tout allait mieux.

The next morning, everything was better.
