Listening to French without translating every word: follow the message
Practise following French in chunks: catch the action, track ça and notice mais. Work through a changed meeting time and a parent’s wish, with a quiz.
In short
Follow a useful phrase as one unit: ça me convient means “that works for me”. Keep three things in view as the speaker continues: who is acting, what changes and what small words such as ça refer to. Use a translation afterwards to check a difficult phrase.

How do you understand French without translating every word?
- Lina
Je voulais venir à dix-huit heures, mais j’ai dû rester au bureau. Est-ce qu’on peut se retrouver à dix-neuf heures ?
I wanted to come at six, but I had to stay at the office. Can we meet at seven?
- Sam
Dix-neuf heures, ça me convient. On se retrouve devant le café ?
Seven works for me. Shall we meet outside the café?
- Lina
D’accord. Je vous tiens au courant si je suis en retard.
All right. I’ll keep you informed if I’m running late.
After one pass, a useful note is 18 h → 19 h ; bureau ; devant le café. It preserves the change and the meeting place. The words voulais and ai dû matter too: Lina had an intention, then an obligation changed the plan.
| French group | What it does | Short meaning note |
|---|---|---|
| Je voulais venir à dix-huit heures | Gives the earlier plan | Plan: 18.00 |
| mais j’ai dû rester au bureau | Explains the obstacle | Work delayed her |
| se retrouver à dix-neuf heures | Proposes a new arrangement | New time: 19.00 |
| ça me convient | Accepts the proposed time | 19.00 works |
| je vous tiens au courant | Promises an update | Will send news if late |
Attach ça to the thing being discussed
Dix-neuf heures, ça me convient.Seven works for me.
Focus: ça = the proposed time
Dix-huit heures, c’est trop tôt. Dix-neuf heures, ça me convient.
Six is too early. Seven works for me.
Une table en terrasse, ça me convient.A table outside works for me.
Focus: ça = the proposed seating
À l’intérieur ou en terrasse ? — En terrasse, ça me convient.
Inside or outside? — Outside works for me.
The phrase stays familiar while its reference changes. Keep ça attached to the latest relevant proposal. If you miss that proposal, ask Qu’est-ce qui vous convient ? or listen again for the time, place or choice.
Keep both sides of mais
J’espère que mon fils restera près de nous, mais je souhaite surtout qu’il soit libre de choisir.
I hope my son will stay close to us, but above all I want him to be free to choose.
Meaning note: rester près de nous ; surtout, choisir librement.
A note containing only “wants son to stay” loses the main emphasis. Mais introduces the second wish, and surtout makes freedom the priority. In Atelier’s parents’ discussion, this kind of contrast helps you follow each parent’s position across several sentences.
