Literary ne without pas: read je ne puis and je n’ose

Read a short French letter with negative ne alone, compare modern paraphrases, and distinguish real negation from expletive ne.

In short

With certain verbs, ne can carry a negative meaning on its own: Je ne puis accepter means “I cannot accept”. Recognise complete models such as Je n’ose répondre, Il ne cesse de parler and Je ne saurais vous dire.

A formal letter

Bien cordialement,

Camille Durand

Read it in English

Dear Madam, I have read your proposal carefully. I cannot accept the proposed timetable: our team is already working on two projects. Several colleagues keep reminding me that we are short of time.

I do not dare ask you for a new deadline after your latest effort. Yet an extra week would let us reread the text together. I could not promise you a final answer before Friday.

I fear you may find this wait too long. Thank you for your patience, and I hope we can continue our exchange. Kind regards, Camille Durand.

Read the negative; then put it in everyday wording
In the letterEveryday paraphraseMeaning
Je ne puis accepter.Je ne peux pas accepter.Acceptance is impossible.
The writer hesitates to ask.
The writer cannot make the promise.

When can ne be used without pas?

I fear you may find this wait too long.

After je crains que, the ne here is expletive: the writer fears that the wait WILL seem too long. Adding pas would change the feared outcome. Compare Je ne puis répondre, where the answer really is negative.

Other negative words can also explain a missing pas: Je ne connais personne ici contains personne. For your own everyday messages, keep the ordinary full pattern: Je ne comprends pas votre réponse. Literary ne alone belongs to particular constructions, rather than every verb.
