Verb drill

French past tense drill: turn answers into questions

Practise passé composé questions: read an answer, then ask the question that gets it. Où es-tu allé ? Qu'est-ce que tu as mangé ? Avec qui ? Typed answers with checking.

In short

To ask about the past, put a question word before the passé composé: Où est-ce que tu es allé ? (or Où es-tu allé ?), Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ?, Avec qui tu es parti ?, Quand est-ce qu'il est arrivé ?

How do you ask questions in the past tense in French?

French has three levels: spoken (Tu es allé où ?), standard (Où est-ce que tu es allé ?) and formal (Où es-tu allé ?). With inversion in the passé composé, the subject pronoun goes after the auxiliary and is joined with a hyphen: As-tu mangé ? Est-elle partie ? A -t- is added between two vowels: A-t-il fini ?

In spoken French, the question word often moves to the end: Tu es allé où ? Tu as mangé quoi ? Vous êtes rentrés quand ? Use this with friends; in writing or with people you don't know, prefer est-ce que or inversion.
