In short
This story practises the key A2 choice: the imparfait for background and ongoing states (il faisait nuit, elle était fatiguée), the passé composé for completed events that move the story forward (le téléphone a sonné, elle a couru).

Read it in English
It was my first night at work at the hospital. It was cold and the corridor was very quiet. I was a little scared.
Around two o'clock, I was filing records when a call bell rang. It was room twelve.
I ran down the corridor. An elderly patient wasn't sleeping: she was thirsty and wanted to talk.
I gave her some water and we chatted for ten minutes. At six, the sun was rising when I went home, tired but happy.
The logic behind the answers
- Je rangeais… quand une sonnette a sonné: an ongoing action (imparfait) interrupted by an event (passé composé).
- J'ai couru, je lui ai donné, nous avons discuté: actions in sequence, so passé composé.
- Elle ne dormait pas, elle avait soif: states describing the situation, so imparfait.
- Je suis rentrée: rentrer takes être, and the narrator is a woman.
