Qualify a claim in French: five precise ways to set its limits

Use French phrases for group, time, condition, attribution and inference. Study a small trial report, then choose wording that keeps each claim accurate.

In short

Qualify the part of the claim that needs a boundary: who, when, under what condition or according to whom. Lors de l’essai de juin, trois des quatre débutants… is more precise than placing peut-être before a broad claim.

The report gives a group, a period and a judgement about ease of use. Keep those three details together.

Nuancer avec précision

1 · Name the group

Use parmi, chez or a named group. A proportion stays tied to the people counted.

2 · Name the period

Use lors de with an event and pendant with a period. This locates the finding in time.

3 · Keep the condition

Use à condition que with the subjunctive, or si with the tense suited to the hypothesis.

4 · Attribute the assessment

Use a reporting verb when the result is what people said. Keep their assessment attached to them.

5 · Separate the finding from the inference

A second sentence can explain how far the finding takes you. Suggérer presents a possible reading; établir presents a conclusion as demonstrated.

Ces retours suggèrent que la fiche est plus accessible pour certains débutants.This feedback suggests that the sheet is more accessible for some beginners.

Ils ne permettent pas de conclure à une amélioration générale de la compréhension.They do not allow us to conclude that comprehension has improved across the board.

Keep the finding at its reported scale

In both repairs, the numbers stay definite. The revision restores the group and the reported judgement. Adding probablement would change certainty while leaving the oversized group and the new outcome in the sentence. Put the boundary where the meaning changes.
