Verb drill

Make dense French sentences clearer: eight editing drills

Unpack a dense French sentence, then practise eight focused edits. Restore verbs and clear references while preserving conditions, exceptions and verb tense.

In short

Find the main action, give competing conditions their own sentence and name any unclear reference. Keep the original degree of commitment: a proposal in serait should still read as a proposal after you split it.

Study first: one sentence becomes four

Le comité envisage, après avoir consulté les groupes qui réservent régulièrement la salle, une modification des horaires qui resterait soumise à la disponibilité des animateurs et ne concernerait pas les séances déjà confirmées.

After consulting the groups that regularly book the room, the committee is considering a timetable change that would remain subject to facilitator availability and would not affect sessions already confirmed.

The consultation has taken place. The timetable change is still under consideration.

Le comité a consulté les groupes qui réservent régulièrement la salle. Il envisage maintenant une modification des horaires. Cette modification resterait soumise à la disponibilité des animateurs. Les séances déjà confirmées ne seraient pas concernées.

The full rewrite keeps the consulted group, the proposal, the staffing condition and the exception.

The four-sentence version gives the proposal and its condition separate space. Cette modification also makes the reference explicit. The shorter result still asks the reader to connect the ideas, so a named noun can be more helpful than another elle.

How do you make a dense French sentence clearer?

Fill each gap using the transformation in its hint. The first four items restore a verb from a noun phrase. The next four keep the condition, the exception or the reference visible. For longer gaps, enter the whole phrase; accents and agreements count.

1 · Replace a noun-heavy phrase with a verb

  1. Le comité les demandes. (procédera à l’examen des demandes → futur simple d’examiner)
  2. L’équipe les activités. (assure l’organisation des activités → présent d’organiser)
  3. La direction le projet. (procédera à l’évaluation du projet → futur simple d’évaluer)
  4. Le secrétariat les participants. (assure l’information des participants → présent d’informer)

2 · Retain the logical link or name the reference
