Clarify a French work brief: six questions before you start

A practical French question sheet for clarifying a task’s result, audience, format, scope and deadline, followed by a model exchange and three checks.

In short

Ask about the missing detail: Un document écrit ou une présentation ? Pour quelle équipe ? Pour quand ? Then repeat the agreed task in one sentence and check it with C’est bien cela ?

Clarifier une tâche · six questions

1 · What result?

Name the deliverable. Faire un point can mean giving an update; ask what the person wants to receive.

Quel résultat attends-tu exactement ?What result are you expecting exactly?

2 · Who will use it?

Ask about the audience before choosing detail and vocabulary.

À qui s’adresse cette synthèse ?Who is this summary for?

3 · Which format?

Offer two relevant options so the requester can choose.

Tu souhaites un document écrit ou une présentation ?Would you like a written document or a presentation?

4 · Which material?

Check the period and any exclusions. Seulement makes the limit explicit.

Je reprends seulement les retours du mois dernier ?Should I cover only last month’s feedback?

5 · What length and deadline?

Ask for both the size of the result and when it is needed.

Quelle longueur souhaites-tu ? Pour quand en as-tu besoin ?How long would you like it to be? When do you need it?

6 · Have I understood?

Put the agreed details together so the other person can confirm or correct them.

Donc, une page pour l’équipe produit, à envoyer jeudi avant midi. C’est bien cela ?So, one page for the product team, to send on Thursday before midday. Is that right?
