Practise French conditional requests beyond je voudrais
Build conditional requests by changing the speaker, the action and the reply. Includes model exchanges, a practice checklist and three questions.
In short
Practise a request as a short exchange: say what you need, answer a clarification and respond to an alternative. Start with je voudrais for what you want and pourriez-vous for an action you want the other person to take. Change one detail each round.

How do you make requests with the conditional beyond je voudrais?
| Your purpose | French | Who acts? |
|---|---|---|
| Ask to read it yourself | Je voudrais consulter le document. | You read it. |
| Ask the staff member to send it | Pourriez-vous m’envoyer le document ? | The staff member sends it. |
| Ask to check a date yourself | Je voudrais vérifier la date. | You check it. |
| Ask the staff member to confirm a date | Pourriez-vous confirmer la date ? | The staff member confirms it. |
Say which document you mean, then choose the action. Je voudrais envoyer le document means that you want to send it yourself. For someone else to send it to you, ask Pourriez-vous m’envoyer le document ? The small pronoun m’ identifies you as the recipient.
Round 2: change the speaker and keep the infinitive
| Cue | Model |
|---|---|
| Two people want to consult it. | Nous voudrions consulter le document. |
| You ask one friend to send it. | Pourrais-tu m’envoyer le document ? |
| You ask a staff member to explain it. | Pourriez-vous m’expliquer ce document ? |
Cover the model column and build each request aloud. Keep consulter, envoyer and expliquer in the infinitive. Check nous voudrions, tu pourrais and vous pourriez. In a question with inversion, keep the hyphen: pourrais-tu, pourriez-vous.
Pourriez-vous préciser la date de la réunion ?
Could you clarify the date of the meeting?
Swap the action again: préciser takes its object directly. The request identifies which date you need.
Round 3: handle a clarification and another time
- You
Bonjour, pourriez-vous m’envoyer le programme par courriel ?
Hello, could you email me the programme?
- Staff
Quel programme souhaitez-vous recevoir ?
Which programme would you like to receive?
- You
Celui de la formation de septembre.
The one for the September training course.
- Staff
Je peux vous l’envoyer demain matin.
I can send it to you tomorrow morning.
- You
Ce serait possible aujourd’hui ? J’en ai besoin pour une réunion.
Would today be possible? I need it for a meeting.
- Staff
Oui, je vous l’enverrai cet après-midi.
Yes, I’ll send it to you this afternoon.
- You
Merci beaucoup. Pourriez-vous aussi confirmer la date de début ?
Thank you very much. Could you also confirm the start date?
- Staff
Bien sûr. La formation commence le 9 septembre.
Of course. The training course starts on 9 September.
Replay the exchange with a different document: a timetable, a registration form or a meeting agenda. Give a clear answer to “which one?”. Then change the reply: the staff member can send it tomorrow only. Respond with D’accord, demain matin, cela me convient if that works for you.
