Six ways to read ne
1 · Find the other negative word
Look beyond pas: personne, rien, jamais and plus can carry the negative meaning with ne.
Nora ne conteste rien.Nora disputes nothing.
Personne ne répond.Nobody answers.
2 · Read ne… que as only
The sentence affirms a restricted amount or action. Place “only” next to the element being restricted.
Nous n’avons que deux objections. We have only two objections.
Il ne répond qu’à la première question. He answers only the first question.
3 · Fear and before can introduce expletive ne
After craindre que or avant que, this optional ne leaves the subordinate action positive. These constructions take the subjunctive. Adding pas gives a real negative.
Je crains qu’elle ne refuse.I fear she may refuse.
Répondons avant qu’il ne soit trop tard.Let us reply before it is too late.
Je crains qu’elle ne comprenne pas.I fear she may not understand.
4 · A comparison can also contain expletive ne
In this unequal comparison, the extra ne leaves the comparison intact. Read the two degrees being compared.
Le débat est plus long que je ne pensais. The debate is longer than I thought.
5 · Recognise a formal negative with no pas
Some verbs, including pouvoir, allow negative ne alone in formal writing. Puis is a form of pouvoir. Restore pas in a plain paraphrase to check the sense.
Je ne puis accepter cette conclusion.I cannot accept this conclusion.
Je ne peux pas accepter cette conclusion.I cannot accept this conclusion.
6 · Preserve the strength of the negative
Guère means hardly or not much; point gives a marked negative; nullement gives an emphatic “not at all”. Guère gives no exact amount.
Cette réponse n’est guère convaincante. This answer is hardly convincing.
Je ne partage point cet avis.I do not share that view.
Cela ne résout nullement le problème.That does not solve the problem at all.
