What does merci quand même mean?
| Pattern | French | English |
|---|---|---|
| merci pour + noun | Merci pour votre aide. | Thank you for your help. |
| merci de + past infinitive | Merci d’avoir cherché. | Thank you for looking. |
| thanks despite the result | Merci quand même d’avoir essayé. | Thanks anyway for trying. |
A short Merci quand même can carry disappointment. Adding C’est gentil d’avoir essayé puts the appreciation into words. After successful help, Merci beaucoup ! is usually the simpler response. In each exchange above, the recipient thanks someone for an offer or an attempt to help. To answer that thanks, use De rien or Je vous en prie.
