The present has three shapes: obtien- in the singular, obten- with nous and vous, and obtienn- with ils and elles. Build the imparfait on obten-: j’obtenais, nous obtenions. For the subjunctive, keep obtienn- in obtienne, obtiennes, obtiennent, but return to obten- for obtenions and obteniez.

Use it for a result you secure

Nous avons obtenu l’autorisation de commencer.

We obtained permission to begin.

Elle espère obtenir un stage cet été.

She hopes to get an internship this summer.

Use obtenir directly before the result: obtenir une réponse, un diplôme, une autorisation. The future stem is obtiendr-; it includes both ien and d. The conditional keeps that stem: j’obtiendrais. Even when the result arrives, the compound past uses avoir, not être.

La réponse que nous avons obtenue est claire.

The answer we received is clear.

A feminine direct object before avoir gives obtenue. In nous avons obtenu une réponse, it follows the verb, so the participle is obtenu.

What mistakes do learners make with obtenir?

  • Nous obtienons une réponse.Nous obtenons une réponse.

The present nous form uses obten-, with no i.

  • Elle a obtient son diplôme.Elle a obtenu son diplôme.

Obtient is present; after a, use the participle obtenu.

  • Il faut que nous obtiennions une réponse.Il faut que nous obtenions une réponse.

The subjunctive nous and vous forms use obten-, not obtienn-.
