Santé, à votre santé or à la vôtre: which one?
| Who you’re toasting | You say | They answer |
|---|---|---|
| One friend or relative (tu) | À ta santé ! | À la tienne ! |
| A group, or someone you call vous | À votre santé ! | À la vôtre ! |
| Anyone, informally | Santé ! / Tchin-tchin ! | Santé ! |
La tienne and la vôtre stand for ta santé and votre santé, so they stay feminine whoever you’re talking to. Watch the accent: votre santé has none, la vôtre has one.
How do you toast a person or an occasion in French?
Use à + the person or the occasion: À Léo !, Aux mariés ! (to the newlyweds), À nos vacances ! Friends sometimes answer À la tienne, Étienne ! as a joke, whatever the other person is called. The words are the same whatever is in your glass, water included.
- À votre santé ! — À votre !À votre santé ! — À la vôtre !
The reply needs the article and the accent: la vôtre.

Answer in the form you were addressed in: tu gets la tienne.
