Asking for the toilet in French: directions, codes and keys

Ask where the toilets are in French, understand the answer, and deal with codes, keys and 'customers only' signs in cafés, stations and shops.

In short

Say Excusez-moi, où sont les toilettes, s'il vous plaît ? (toilettes is always plural). In cafés you may hear that they are réservées aux clients (customers only), or that you need le code or la clé.
