In short

Augmenter and accroître both mean increasing. Augmenter is the everyday choice for amounts and settings; accroître often sounds more formal. Say L’équipe augmente le nombre de séances when someone causes the increase, and Le nombre de séances augmente when the number itself rises.

How do you say “up by” and “up to” in French?

An association compares two months

Participants30366
Sessions per month462
Hours per session220

Le nombre de participants passe de trente à trente-six. Il augmente de six.

The number of participants goes from thirty to thirty-six. It increases by six.

L’association augmente le nombre de séances : il passe de quatre à six par mois.

The association increases the number of sessions: it goes from four to six a month.

De six gives the amount added. À trente-six gives the resulting number. Keep the starting point with passer de… à…: passer de trente à trente-six. The session length stays the same in the table, so say La durée reste la même.
