Read it in English

Noémie lives in the valley where she grew up. From December to April, she works at a hotel reception. She welcomes guests, answers the phone and resolves small booking problems. In July and August, she joins a mountain hut’s team. There she prepares rooms and helps serve meals.

She enjoys her two seasonal contracts, but they do not cover the whole year. In spring and autumn, her income falls. During the busy months, she saves part of her wages. This lets her pay her rent during the periods when she is not working.

Last winter, a large hotel offered her a year-round job in a distant city. The pay was more regular. Yet she refused after working out the cost of new accommodation and trips to visit her mother. She would have earned more, but would also have spent more. “I wanted to compare my whole life, rather than just two salaries,” she explains.

Noémie currently shares a flat with a friend. In quieter periods, she helps her mother in the garden and takes a hotel management course. Later, she hopes to find a year-round job in the valley. Her aim is therefore not to remain a seasonal worker at any cost: she is seeking a balance between stability and her attachment to the place. For now, the two seasons give her a reason to stay, while requiring her to prepare for what comes next.
