Read it in English

For Bernard’s retirement, his colleagues had decorated the break room with photos. The cake had just been served when a woman appeared in the doorway. Bernard put down his plate. “Élise? But I thought you still lived in Brest!”

Élise had left their workshop twelve years earlier. At the time, her mother had become ill and she had had to leave quickly. Bernard had arranged cover and kept her tools for several weeks. He had also given her a blue notebook in which he had recorded the settings of the machines she used. “You’ll return to your trade when you can,” he had told her.

For a long time, they had sent cards, then news had become less frequent. The previous week, a former colleague had sent her a message about the party. She had booked a train ticket but asked for it to be kept secret. She wanted to see the surprise on Bernard’s face.

She took the notebook out of her bag. The first pages were in Bernard’s handwriting; Élise had filled the following ones with her own notes. Thanks to this little guide, she had regained confidence in a new workshop. “You gave me time, and you helped me come back,” she explained. Bernard, usually so talkative, was searching for words. Eventually, he asked her to leaf through the notebook with him. The cake could wait: they had twelve years of memories to share.
