B1 French reading: what does a neighbourhood survey tell us?

Read a French questionnaire report about repair workshops and board games. Track 80 subscribers, 32 replies and a proposed trial through five questions.

In short

Repair workshops lead among the 32 people who replied. Keep that group attached to the result: Parmi les réponses reçues, les ateliers de réparation arrivent en tête. The report then proposes two trial sessions before a lasting decision.

A neighbourhood association wants to choose an activity for a small room. Read its report and keep three groups separate: newsletter subscribers, people who replied and all neighbourhood residents. The numbers make sense once you know which group each one describes.

The responses: To plan the future of the neighbourhood’s small room, the association sent a questionnaire to the eighty people subscribed to its newsletter. Thirty-two replied. Among them, twenty chose repair workshops, eight preferred board games and four gave no preference. Each person could select only one answer.

What the figures show: Repair workshops therefore lead among the responses received. This does not mean that most neighbourhood residents want them. Residents who do not receive the newsletter were not contacted, and not all subscribers replied. Several comments also request a later time, without specifying a common day. The times will therefore need to be discussed with interested people.

The next step: The group proposes organising two trial sessions before making a lasting decision. A second questionnaire will be distributed on site and in the neighbouring library. It will gather other views. The group will also need to examine the resources available to open the room: the budget, equipment and volunteers. The session dates will be announced after that discussion.

NumberWhat it counts
80Newsletter subscribers who received the questionnaire.
32People who replied.
20Replies choosing repair workshops.
8Replies choosing board games.
4Replies giving no preference.
48Subscribers who did not reply: 80 − 32.

The three answer categories add up to 32: 20 + 8 + 4. The other 48 subscribers did not reply, so the report gives no preference for them. Residents outside the newsletter list form another group again. When summarising, start with parmi les personnes qui ont répondu to keep the result clear.
