Dès que + future: practise “as soon as” in French

Practise dès que in routines, past events and future plans. Change the verbs, check future perfect forms and compare as soon as with since.

The short answer

Dès que means “as soon as”. For a future plan, French uses a future tense after it: Je répondrai dès que j’aurai le temps means “I’ll reply as soon as I have time”.

A completed sequenceDès que j’ai terminé, j’ai prévenu mon équipe. As soon as I finished, I let my team know.

Completion before the next stepDès que j’aurai terminé, je préviendrai mon équipe. As soon as I have finished, I will let my team know.

English keeps “finish” in the future translation. French marks the future in the time clause too. Use the future perfect to make completion clear: j’aurai terminé. Form it with the future of avoir or être plus the past participle. With elle sera arrivée, the participle agrees with elle.
