In short
French pairs nouns with fixed verbs that often differ from English: prendre une décision (make a decision), faire une pause (take a break), passer un examen (take an exam, not pass it!), prendre un rendez-vous (make an appointment).

When do you use faire, prendre or passer?
| French | Means |
|---|---|
| passer un examen | take an exam (not pass) |
| réussir un examen | pass an exam |
| prendre une décision | make a decision |
| faire une promenade | go for a walk |
Passer un examen is the classic trap: it means to sit the exam. To pass it, say réussir un examen or être reçu(e). Many collocations simply have to be learned as chunks; reading and listening are the best way to absorb them.
