A1 French reading: an apple-cake recipe notebook

Read a short French kitchen scene with translation, food picture cards and questions. Follow Mila as she copies an apple-cake recipe into her notes.

In short

A recette is a recipe; its ingrédients are the things you need to make it. In this A1 reading, Mila copies an apple-cake title and ingredient list, then gives the notebook back to her father.

La page du vieux carnet

Mila aime cuisiner avec son père. Ce matin, elle ouvre un vieux carnet1 dans la cuisine. Sur la première page, il y a une recette2 de gâteau aux pommes. « J’aime ce gâteau ! » dit Mila.

Elle lit la liste des ingrédients3 : des pommes, de la farine, des œufs, du beurre et du sucre. Elle prend une feuille4 et un stylo. Elle recopie5 le titre et la liste, mais pas les instructions.

Son père cherche une recette de soupe. Mila lui donne le carnet et garde sa feuille. « On fait le gâteau maintenant ? » demande son père. « Demain ! Aujourd’hui, je prépare ma liste. » Elle pose sa feuille sur la table.

Mila likes cooking with her father. This morning, she opens an old notebook in the kitchen. On the first page, there is an apple-cake recipe. “I like this cake!” says Mila.

She reads the ingredient list: apples, flour, eggs, butter and sugar. She takes a sheet of paper and a pen. She copies out the title and list, but not the instructions.

Her father is looking for a soup recipe. Mila gives him the notebook and keeps her sheet. “Shall we make the cake now?” her father asks. “Tomorrow! Today, I’m preparing my list.” She puts her sheet on the table.
