A2 French story: the door at the back of the studio

Léon finds his sister’s art studio empty. Read an A2 French story with glosses, translation and questions, then discover what is behind the second door.

In short

Un atelier is an artist’s studio here. Léon sees bare walls and wonders whether his sister has stopped painting. A door at the back reveals the canvases: she has moved them while she cleans.

Élise a souri. « Viens voir. »

« Alors, tu as encore du travail ! »

Read it in English

When Léon entered his sister Élise’s studio, he saw no paintings on the walls. The large table was empty. “Don’t you paint any more?” he asked. Élise smiled. “Come and look.”

She opened a door at the back of the room. Behind that door, several canvases were stored against another wall. Some were finished; a large blue canvas was still in progress. Léon recognised the canal landscape.

“I moved the paintings to clean the first room,” Élise explained. She showed Léon a small sketch of a bridge on a sheet of paper. “Tomorrow, I’m going back to the blue canvas. The sky is finished, but the bridge still needs painting.” Léon looked at the painting, then at his sister. “So you’ve still got work to do!”
