How do you answer a question with ou in French?
| Reply | When it helps |
|---|---|
| Jeudi, de préférence. | You have a preference. |
| Les deux me conviennent. | Both days work. |
| Ni l’un ni l’autre. Je suis libre vendredi. | Neither day works; you offer another. |
| Oui, nous avons les deux. | You confirm that both items are available. |
Vous avez un croissant ou une tartine ? can ask whether either is available. The reply Oui, nous avons les deux fits perfectly. When someone asks Tu préfères mardi ou jeudi ?, a bare oui leaves the preferred day unclear. Name a day, accept both or suggest another.
Où veux-tu t’asseoir : à l’intérieur ou en terrasse ?
Where do you want to sit: inside or on the terrace?
The first où asks about a place. The second ou joins the two options. The question mark changes neither spelling.
