A short French apology: late replies and changed plans

Write a warm French apology with two message models, address forms and an A2 writing task. Practise explaining a delay and suggesting a new plan.

In short

Start with Désolé de répondre si tard or Désolée de répondre si tard. Then answer the message or explain the change: Je ne peux plus venir samedi. Est-ce que dimanche te convient ? One apology and a useful next step make a clear short reply.

How do you apologise for a late reply in French?

Salut Adam ! Lina

Hi Adam! Sorry to reply so late. I didn’t see your message yesterday. Yes, I’m free on Sunday for a coffee. Are you free at three o’clock? See you soon! Lina

Lina answers the invitation, then asks about the time. Désolée agrees with Lina.

Salut Adam ! Lina

Hi Adam! I’m sorry, I can no longer come on Saturday. I have to work. Are you free on Sunday afternoon? Thanks for understanding. See you soon! Lina

Ne peux plus says that Saturday was possible before and has become impossible. Sunday is a new suggestion.

The writer chooses désolé (masculine singular) or désolée (feminine singular), whoever receives the message. Excuse-moi changes with the recipient. For a late reply, de répondre si tard names the action; pour le retard is a broader apology for the delay.
