In short
Match the quantifier to both the number and the noun: toutes les réponses but tous les clients. A survey of twenty customers tells you about those twenty answers; name that group when reporting what most people preferred.

| Meaning | French pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Several + plural noun | plusieurs clients | Plusieurs clients demandent une autre boisson. |
| Each + singular noun | chaque réponse | Chaque réponse compte. |
| A lot of + noun | beaucoup de réponses | Nous avons beaucoup de réponses. |
| No respondent + singular verb | aucun répondant ne… | Aucun répondant ne demande cela. |
What the café asks about
Find:
The café receives twenty completed questionnaires. Twelve people prefer the terrace, five prefer indoors and three have no preference. The questions about drinks and pastries are separate, so their totals need not match the seating totals.
Vingt réponses, pas tout le quartier
Lundi, Inès lit les résultats d’un questionnaire rempli par vingt clients. Douze préfèrent la terrasse, cinq préfèrent la salle et trois n’ont pas de préférence. « (most; begin with La) des personnes interrogées préfèrent donc la terrasse », résume-t-elle. Elle vérifie ensuite (all; feminine plural) les réponses une deuxième fois.
Quatre clients demandent du café décaféiné. « (a few; one word beginning with Quel) clients souhaitent cette boisson, note Inès.
Read it in English
On Monday, Inès reads the results of a questionnaire completed by twenty customers. Twelve prefer the terrace, five prefer indoors and three have no preference. “Most of the people surveyed therefore prefer the terrace,” she sums up. She then checks all the answers a second time.
Four customers ask for decaffeinated coffee. “A few customers would like this drink,” Inès notes. Her colleague writes, “All customers want decaf.” Inès immediately corrects the sentence. Four out of twenty is not everyone. On the other hand, not a single customer asked for iced tea.
The question about croissants brings a surprise. Two people find them too small, but eighteen are satisfied with their size. “There are few negative comments on this point,” Inès explains. She rereads each form: every one contains an answer to that question. Some customers have also added a personal comment.
To prepare for the meeting, Inès files each questionnaire in a folder. Her colleague has a lot of questions about the terrace. They decide to consult evening customers before changing the hours. Several answers do indicate that the outside tables are already occupied at noon. Inès ends her report: “This survey describes twenty opinions; it does not represent the whole customer base.”
