B1 French reading: the path missing from a hand-drawn map

Ana finds a shortcut missing from a garden map. Read a B1 French text, explore the garden vocabulary and answer questions about the drawing and the real place.

In short

Le sentier is the path; le raccourci is its use as a shorter route; le repère helps you find your way. In this reading, compare what Ana sees on the paper with what Maël shows her in the garden.

Maël l’a invitée à sortir.

Read it in English

To show his garden to his cousin Ana, Maël had drawn a small map. He had marked the house, the well and the three large trees. Ana put the drawing on the table. “To get from the well to the gate, do you have to go all the way round?” she asked. On the paper, no path linked those two places.

Maël invited her outside. Behind the hedge, a narrow passage crossed the garden. “I take this shortcut every day,” he explained. He had not drawn it: near the edge of the sheet, he had run out of space to show the passage clearly. Ana followed Maël as far as the gate. The journey was much shorter than the one she had imagined.

Back at the table, she added a pencil line and wrote “behind the hedge”. She also circled the well. For her, it was a good landmark because it could be seen from both sides of the garden. Maël looked at the line and nodded. The garden had stayed the same, but the map had become more useful. The gate, for its part, had not moved on the drawing.

The phrase sur le papier sets the boundary of Ana’s first observation. Il ne l’avait pas dessiné looks back to Maël’s earlier drawing. Later, elle a ajouté une ligne changes the map. Track those verbs to keep the order clear.
