In short
A beehive is une ruche. Its boxes are le corps de ruche and la hausse; the removable rectangles inside are les cadres. For the workshop kit, recognise l’enfumoir, le lève-cadres, la combinaison d’apiculture and les gants d’apiculture.

Seven visible hive parts
Tools and protective kit
| Position | French name | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| On top | le toit | The metal outer lid |
| Under the roof | le couvre-cadres | A thin cover board |
| Upper box | la hausse | The shallower wooden box in this model |
| Main box | le corps de ruche | The deeper wooden box |
| At the bottom | le plancher | The base with the entrance landing board |
The word cadre means “frame”: here, a wooden rectangle holding comb. Le couvre-cadres covers the frames; le lève-cadres is the small metal tool. Both compound nouns keep their final -s in the singular. L’enfumoir is masculine: un enfumoir. The gloves are des gants, masculine plural.
