Pour or afin de? Say what an action is for in French

Explain a goal with pour or afin de, make it negative with ne pas, and switch to pour que when another person carries out the intended action.

In short

Use pour + infinitive to say what you want to achieve: Je marche pour rester en forme. Afin de means “in order to” and suits more formal writing. In these personal sentences, use pour que + subject + subjunctive when someone else will carry out the intended action.
