Adjective-led concession · seven rules
1 · 1 · Keep the degree meaning
This pattern admits a quality even at a high degree, then says it does not decide the outcome. It is common in formal argument.
Aussi solide soit-il, cet argument ne règle pas la question. However strong it may be, this argument does not settle the question.
2 · 2 · Put the quality first
The concessive group starts with aussi + adjective. Aussi is an adverb and stays unchanged.
Aussi séduisante soit-elle, cette hypothèse reste à vérifier. However appealing it may be, this hypothesis still needs checking.
3 · 3 · Use the subjunctive in this pattern
With être, choose soit for il or elle, soient for ils or elles. The inverted clause is a concession, rather than a question.
Aussi utiles soient-ils, ces exemples restent insuffisants. However useful they may be, these examples remain insufficient.
4 · 4 · Match adjective and pronoun to the referent
A feminine plural noun needs a feminine plural adjective and elles. Neither inversion nor formal register changes that agreement.
Aussi précises soient-elles, ces données restent incomplètes. However precise they may be, these data remain incomplete.
5 · 5 · Join verb and pronoun with a hyphen
Write soit-il, soit-elle and soient-elles. The verb already ends in t: add no extra linking -t-.
Aussi limitée soit-elle, cette mesure produit un effet. However limited it may be, this measure has an effect.
6 · 6 · Si gives a closely related formal pattern
Compare si prudent soit-il with si prudent qu’il soit. Use inversion without que, or que with normal subject order.
Si prudent qu’il soit, il peut se tromper. However careful he may be, he can be mistaken.
7 · 7 · Separate concessive aussi from consequence
Sentence-initial aussi can also mean “therefore”. In that use, no adjective-led concession appears, and the indicative can follow.
Le délai est court ; aussi devons-nous agir rapidement. The deadline is close; therefore we must act quickly.
