Gap-fill

French paragraph flow: link known and new information

Follow a French paragraph from a proposal to its practical conditions. Fill eight gaps, trace the reference chain and compare two natural sentence openings.

In short

Start a new sentence from something the reader can identify, then add a useful detail. Le projet prévoit une nouvelle organisation. Cette organisation… gives the next sentence an anchor. A clear noun phrase often helps when cela could refer to several ideas.

How do you link sentences smoothly in French?

Study first: the new point becomes the next anchor
SentenceStarting pointNew contribution
Une association propose un accompagnement individuel.Une associationIndividual support.
Cet accompagnement aiderait les nouveaux bénévoles.Cet accompagnementA group of people who benefit.
Ces bénévoles seraient suivis par une personne expérimentée.Ces bénévolesWho would support them.

The paragraph moves from an offer of support to the people receiving it, then to the person providing it. The repeated nouns make each connection clear. Each sentence also contributes something new, so the paragraph develops.

Fill the links in a planning note

Complete the gaps using the cues. Read the whole paragraph before choosing each form: gender, number and the intended reference all matter. The conditional keeps the arrangements at the proposal stage.

Read it in English

An association proposes a new arrangement for welcoming volunteers. This arrangement would include individual support. This support would help people who have just joined the team.

These people would be supported by experienced volunteers. The latter would answer their questions during the first month. Their role would be specified at the outset: they would help the new members understand the tasks.

The project also provides for an evaluation after a month. This evaluation would focus on the difficulties encountered. They would be discussed as a team. This discussion would then allow the support to be adapted.
