French indirect questions: où, quand, pourquoi, ce que and ce qui

Transform French information questions into indirect questions. Practise où, quand, comment, pourquoi, ce que and ce qui in nine answers.

In short

Keep où, quand, comment or pourquoi when you embed an information question: Je demande où elle habite. For “what”, use ce que as object and ce qui as subject. Remove est-ce que and direct pronoun inversion.

Direct questionIndirect question
Où habites-tu ?Je demande où tu habites.
Quand est-ce qu’elle arrive ?Je demande quand elle arrive.
Pourquoi est-il parti ?Je demande pourquoi il est parti.
Qu’est-ce qu’elle cherche ?Je demande ce qu’elle cherche.
Qu’est-ce qui manque ?Je demande ce qui manque.

In ce qu’elle cherche, elle is the subject: she is looking for something. In ce qui manque, “what” is itself the subject: something is missing. Before a vowel, ce que becomes ce qu’. Ce qui keeps its -i.

What word order do French indirect questions use?

Pouvez-vous me dire quand elle arrivera ?

Can you tell me when she will arrive?

Pouvez-vous asks the main question. Inside it, elle arrivera keeps subject–verb order. Future arrivera suits a future arrival. The question mark belongs to the whole sentence; Je me demande quand elle arrivera is a statement and ends with a full stop.

Je me demande où habite Léa.

I wonder where Léa lives.

A noun subject can follow the verb in some indirect questions. With a personal pronoun, use où elle habite, rather than direct-question où habite-t-elle.

Keep the subject and the time

Complete each indirect question. The cues retain the same people: elle stays elle and vous stays vous. All reporting verbs here are in the present. Copy the appropriate question word and the full inner clause into the gap.
