Verb drill

French nominalisation drill: rapidement becomes rapide

Change adverbs into agreeing adjectives in French noun phrases. Practise rapide, progressive, massif and vive, and preserve the meaning of the original.

In short

An adverb describing an action can become an adjective describing its noun: vérifier rapidement → une vérification rapide. The adjective agrees with the new noun: un accroissement progressif, une augmentation progressive. Keep the original property—speed, size or manner—clear.

ActionNoun phraseWhat changes?
vérifier rapidementune vérification rapideThe adjective has the same singular form for either gender.
augmenter progressivementune augmentation progressiveFeminine singular: progressive.
s’accroître progressivementun accroissement progressifMasculine singular: progressif.
réagir vivementune réaction viveFeminine singular: vive.
recourir massivement à l’empruntun recours massif à l’empruntMasculine singular: massif.
mettre progressivement la réforme en œuvreune mise en œuvre progressive de la réformeThe adjective describes the whole implementation process.

With the verb, progressivement stays unchanged. With the noun, the adjective follows gender and number: une augmentation progressive, des augmentations progressives. The same is true of the masculine pair: un accroissement progressif, des accroissements progressifs. Keep the noun’s article when practising; it makes the agreement visible.

vérifier rapidementto check quickly

Focus: speed or a short checking process

une vérification rapide

La vérification a duré deux minutes. C’était une vérification rapide.
The check took two minutes. It was a quick check.

répondre sans attendreto reply without delay

Focus: how soon the reply starts

une réponse immédiate

Nora a répondu dès la réception du message. Sa réponse a été immédiate.
Nora replied as soon as she received the message. Her reply was immediate.

For promptness, immédiate gives a clearer time reference than a loose substitution of rapide. Likewise, probablement concerns how certain the speaker is about a whole statement. Preserve that qualification in a clause: Les prix vont probablement augmenter. The noun phrase une forte augmentation describes size instead.

Question 1No account needed
The sentence says the group did not react quickly. Which fact is still possible?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The group reacted slowly.. Denying speed can leave a slower reaction possible. Absence de réaction would state that there was no reaction.

Question 2No account needed
Keep the uncertainty in “Prices will probably rise”.

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Les prix vont probablement augmenter.. Probablement keeps the original uncertainty and future reference. The other options change certainty or time.
