| Subject | Past conditional of devoir |
|---|---|
| je | j’aurais dû |

In these exercises, the omission and consequence are both supplied. Fill only the gap. Keep the printed consequence as a fact. After dû, use the infinitive from the cue; the following verb stays unconjugated. Dû keeps its circumflex and stays unchanged in elles auraient dû répondre.
1 · Recover the missed duty
(Léa did not confirm; use confirmer sa présence.)
- Nous ; nos collègues nous ont attendus inutilement. (We did not warn the team; use prévenir l’équipe.)
- Tu ; ta candidature a été refusée. (You missed the deadline; use respecter le délai.)
- J’ ; mon intervention a été annulée. (I did not ask permission; use demander une autorisation.)
- Vous ; la réunion a été reportée. (You did not check availability; use vérifier les disponibilités.)
- Elles ; l’analyse a pris du retard. (They did not send the results; use transmettre les résultats.)
2 · Keep the obligation and complete the actual result
(Known result: his absence disrupted the department; désorganiser, passé composé.)
(Known result: the client chose another supplier; choisir, passé composé.)
- Tu aurais dû consulter tes collègues ; ils ta décision. (Known result: they challenged your decision; contester, passé composé.)
(Known result: an error caused a misunderstanding; créer, passé composé.)
(Known result: several people missed the meeting; manquer, passé composé.)
(Known result: they duplicated their work; travailler, passé composé.)
- Elle aurait due répondre.Elle aurait dû répondre.
In aurait dû + infinitive, dû stays unchanged even with a feminine subject.
- Nous aurions dû avons prévenu.Nous aurions dû prévenir.
The obligation frame already contains the conjugated auxiliary. Follow dû with an infinitive.
When the cue gives reassignment as an actual event, report it as a fact. A conditional result would change its status.
