Les relatifs neutres après une préposition
1 · An unnamed means: ce avec quoi
Start with avec cela. The relative keeps avec and uses quoi after it.
Je travaille avec cela. Voici ce avec quoi je travaille.I work with this. Here is what I work with.
Tu écris avec quoi ? Montre-moi ce avec quoi tu écris. What are you writing with? Show me what you are writing with.
2 · An aspect: ce en quoi
In careful writing, ce en quoi can identify a feature or point of difference. It is more formal than comment in many everyday questions.
Explique ce en quoi ces deux méthodes diffèrent.Explain in what respect these two methods differ.
Je comprends ce en quoi cette solution est utile.I understand in what way this solution is useful.
3 · A named noun: lequel agrees
Once you name the thing, use an agreeing relative after avec: lequel, laquelle, lesquels, lesquelles.
Le crayon avec lequel je dessine est bleu. The pencil I draw with is blue.
La règle avec laquelle je trace les lignes est cassée.The ruler I draw the lines with is broken.
4 · A person: avec qui
Use avec qui when you mean a person. Compare the colleague with the means used.
Voici la personne avec qui je travaille. Here is the person I work with.
Voici ce avec quoi je travaille. Here is what I work with.
5 · Choose the preposition before the relative
Follow the whole construction: penser à, travailler sur, écrire avec. A direct object uses ce que.
Je sais ce à quoi tu penses.I know what you are thinking about.
Je comprends ce que tu proposes.I understand what you are proposing.
