Dialogue

Question a proposal’s premise in French: a meeting dialogue

Practise a C1 French meeting dialogue that separates an observed need from a proposed solution, asks for evidence and agrees on a fair comparison.

In short

Use Votre proposition suppose que… to name the assumption, then Sur quoi repose cette hypothèse ? to ask for its basis. Keep the need visible while you examine the reasoning: Le besoin est clair ; c’est le choix de la solution que je souhaite examiner.

A simpler phone experience: app or website?

Adam proposes an app. Your role is to ask what makes an app necessary and agree on a useful comparison. In practice mode, use the English cues to supply Lina’s lines.

Your lines are hidden in practice mode. Say them aloud, then reveal to compare.
  1. Adam

    English

Users are asking for easier access from their phones. So I propose developing an app.

  2. Lina

Restate the need and ask why an app is the proposed solution.

    English

If I understand you correctly, the need concerns ease of access. What leads us to choose an app rather than a mobile-friendly website?

  3. Adam

    English

Several people said the current website was hard to use on a phone.

  4. Lina

Identify the assumption and ask what supports it.

    English

So your proposal assumes that an app would solve this problem better. What observations do you base that assumption on?

  5. Adam

    English

We have their comments, but we haven’t compared the two formats yet.

  6. Lina

Separate the clear need from the open choice of format.

    English

The need for easier access is clear. The format, however, is still to be determined.

  7. Adam

    English

So you think we should drop the app?

  8. Lina

Propose checking first and introduce an alternative.

    English

I suggest checking the assumption first. Could a mobile-friendly website also meet that need?

  9. Adam

Comment départager les deux solutions ?

    English

How can we choose between the two solutions?

  10. Lina

Suggest three shared tasks for the comparison.

    English

Could we compare them on the same tasks: finding a time, registering and changing a registration?

  11. Adam

Oui.

    English

Yes. We’ll measure the time needed and record the difficulties encountered.

  12. Lina

    Summarise the agreed next action.

    English

So let’s record this point: we are preparing a comparison before choosing the format.

What allows us to move from that observation to that conclusion?

Does that assumption apply to all users or only to certain user groups?

What result would show us that the solution meets the need?

Votre proposition suppose que… highlights the assumption to examine. Pourrions-nous invites a joint next step; avant de choisir puts the choice after the comparison.
