Gap-fill

Check a French past-tense paragraph: revise, then fill the gaps

Work through a French past-tense revision, then complete a new paragraph with imparfait, passé composé and plus-que-parfait forms.

Read for meaning, then forms

Check who did what and in what order. Use the imparfait for a background viewed from within, the passé composé for an episode presented as complete, and the plus-que-parfait for an earlier action. Then check each auxiliary and participle together.

Léa takes feminine nerveuse. After the auxiliary a, use past participles: préparé and irregular rejoint.

Hier, Léa était nerveuse. Elle a préparé sa présentation pendant une heure. Puis elle a rejoint le cours en ligne.

Yesterday, Léa was nervous. She prepared her presentation for an hour. Then she joined the online class.

Était gives the background. The full hour of preparation and joining the class are presented as completed episodes.

Your turn: a difficult start to an online class

Nora and Inès have prepared a presentation together. Complete their account using the tense named in each hint. Both women are the subject of elles. In the help sentence, l’ refers to Nora; keep the pronoun and check agreement.

Read it in English

Yesterday morning, Nora and Inès were nervous before their first online class. They had rehearsed their presentation the day before. At ten, Nora tried to join the class, but she couldn’t find the link.

Inès helped her. The two friends waited five minutes, then joined the group. The teacher was explaining the programme when they arrived. At the end of the class, they presented their work. They were relieved: everything had gone well.
