Write clear conditions in French: à condition que and à moins que
Write a practical French condition with a named action and requirement. Compare à condition que, à moins que and quitte à, then test three short notices.
In short
Start with the action, then name the requirement: Vous pouvez participer à condition que vous vous inscriviez avant vendredi. Use à moins que for an exception that changes the plan. Use quitte à for a possible cost you accept.

What is the difference between à condition que and à moins que?
à condition queon condition that
Focus: A requirement for the plan
The session will take place on condition that ten people sign up.
à moins queunless
Focus: An exception to the plan
The session will take place unless the facilitator is absent.
quitte àeven if it means
Focus: A possible downside you accept
We will keep the session, even if it means finishing later.
In the first example, ten registrations are required. In the second, the session is planned and the facilitator’s absence is the exception. In the third, finishing later is an accepted cost. Each connector gives the reader a different instruction.
Give each permission its own condition
You can take part remotely and receive a recording on condition that you request it.
Does the request cover both remote participation and the recording? The reader has to decide.
You can take part remotely. To receive a recording, you must request it before Monday.
Two sentences separate an open permission from an action that needs a request.
| Vague draft | Clear message | What the reader now knows |
|---|---|---|
| Which confirmation matters. |
| When and under what condition. |
| Il faut répondre rapidement. | Confirmez votre présence avant vendredi à midi. | The action and its deadline. |
After à condition que, write soit, puissiez or fassiez when those verbs fit your message. After conditional si, a possible future situation uses the present: si tous les participants sont présents. With à moins que, you may see ne: à moins que l’animatrice ne soit absente. That optional ne adds no negative meaning.
