Jusqu’à ce que: practise “until” with a French cloze

Use jusqu’à ce que + subjunctive for an event that ends an action. Study the forms, complete a rehearsal scene and compare until with a fixed time.

In short

Jusqu’à ce que means “until” before a complete event clause. Use the subjunctive: Nous attendons jusqu’à ce que Nora soit prête. For a fixed time, use the shorter jusqu’à: Nous attendons jusqu’à midi.

At rehearsal: match each subject to its endpoint

The group is preparing a short performance. In the practice below, use the English verb cue in each gap to complete the event that ends the waiting, repeating or staying. Each subject controls its own verb: nous attendons is the main action; Nora soit prête is the endpoint.

What is the difference between jusqu’à and jusqu’à ce que?

Nous répétons jusqu’à dix-huit heures.We rehearse until six o’clock.

Focus: A fixed time

jusqu’à + time

La répétition dure jusqu’à midi.
The rehearsal lasts until noon.

Nous répétons jusqu’à ce que la scène soit prête.We rehearse until the scene is ready.

Focus: An event that sets the endpoint

jusqu’à ce que + subjunctive

Nous restons jusqu’à ce que tout le monde ait terminé.
We stay until everyone has finished.

Nous répétons pour que la scène soit fluide. We rehearse so that the scene flows smoothly.

Focus: The purpose of rehearsing

pour que + subjunctive

Je parle lentement pour que tu comprennes.
I speak slowly so that you understand.

The event clause answers “until what happens?”. A purpose clause answers “why?”. Keep all the words in jusqu’à ce que, including the accented à. Before elle or il, use qu’: jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit prête. The subjunctive stays in place even in a past account: Nous avons attendu jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit prête.

Read it in English

Nora is working out the rhythm of the scene. We wait until she is ready. Samir repeats his last sentence until everyone understands.

The facilitator addresses both groups: “I’ll stay here until you finish your dialogue. Then I’ll wait until you give a signal.”

I say to Samir: “I’ll keep your place until you come back.” Then I quietly repeat the beginning until we can resume together.
