À l’ombre means in the shade; une ombre is a shadow. Dans l’obscurité means in darkness: it describes how dark a space is, rather than the outline cast by an object.

What is the difference between ombre and obscurité?
| French | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Nous lisons à l’ombre. | Our position: in the shade. |
| Une ombre apparaît sur le mur. | A visible shape: a shadow. |
| La pièce est dans l’obscurité. | The room’s light level: darkness. |
| La terrasse est au soleil. | The opposite of a shaded position. |
Both nouns are feminine: une ombre, cette obscurité. The apostrophe hides the article in l’ombre and l’obscurité. Keep à in the shade phrase and dans in the darkness phrase.

In everyday speech, dans le noir also means “in the dark”: Je cherche mes clés dans le noir. A bench in shade can still be easy to see. Use the shadow noun when you want to point to a particular shape: l’ombre du vase.
