In short
Some time expressions point to a single completed event and usually take the passé composé (hier, soudain, une fois, tout à coup, en 2010). Others describe habits, background or repetition and usually take the imparfait (souvent, tous les jours, autrefois, d'habitude, quand j'étais petit).
