Réunion or rendez-vous? Arrange a meeting in French

Follow a workplace dialogue that separates a team meeting from an appointment. Practise taking, postponing and confirming a rendez-vous.

In short

Une réunion is a meeting or gathering, often involving a team or group. Un rendez-vous is an arranged meeting or appointment. The choice follows the purpose and emphasis, rather than a fixed number of people.

You need an appointment with a manager, but the suggested time clashes with your team meeting. Practise your part of the conversation, including the final confirmation.

Réunion also works outside the office. A rendez-vous can be medical, professional or social.

Write une réunion, des réunions, but un rendez-vous, des rendez-vous. The hyphen and spelling of rendez-vous stay the same. A doctor’s appointment is un rendez-vous chez le médecin. Meeting friends can also be un rendez-vous; the word alone says nothing about romance.
